What happens in your first therapy session?

Written by Equipo ZorroCare · Updated

Short answer

In the first session the professional usually gets to know you, asks why you are seeking help and explains how they work; you can also ask about their approach, frequency, price, cancellation and confidentiality. You do not need to arrive with everything figured out, and if the fit is not right you can try another professional.

What happens in your first therapy session?

Mostly, it is a conversation to get to know each other. The professional explains how they work, and you share, at your own pace, what brought you there. There is no single script: each professional runs a first session in their own way, and you do not need to arrive with everything clear or with the perfect words. Feeling nervous is normal; many people do.

What does the professional usually ask?

They usually want to understand your situation and context. They may ask, for example:

  • What led you to book now and what you would like to change.
  • How long you have felt this way and how it affects your day to day (sleep, work, relationships).
  • Whether you have been in therapy before and what that was like.
  • What your surroundings are like: who you live with, your routine, your support.
  • Some health details that help them shape the work.

You can answer what you feel comfortable sharing and say "I would rather talk about that later." A good professional respects your pace.

What can I ask them?

The first session is also a chance to decide whether you want to continue with that person. These are reasonable questions, and they are commonly suggested when choosing a therapist:

  1. What approach do you work with? What kind of therapy they practice and what the process usually looks like.
  2. Do you have experience with what I am going through? And with people of my age or situation.
  3. How often would we meet, and for how long? Frequency is something the professional sets with you.
  4. How much does each session cost and how do I pay? On ZorroCare the profile shows the total price of the session. To compare, see how much a therapy session costs in Panama.
  5. What is the cancellation policy? On ZorroCare, if you cancel more than 24 hours ahead you are refunded what you paid; with less than 24 hours' notice or if you miss the session, the professional keeps the deposit and anything you paid above it is refunded. See the terms.
  6. How is confidentiality protected, and what are its limits? Ask directly; it is a valid question.
  7. How will we know whether therapy is helping?

How do I prepare?

You do not need to do homework, but these ideas help:

  • Jot down what you want to talk about or what worries you, even if it is just loose phrases.
  • Think about what you would like to achieve, even something small.
  • Arrive a few minutes early (or log in early if it is online) so you do not start in a rush.
  • Find a private spot if the session is by video, with headphones and a good connection.
  • Keep your contact details and payment method handy in case you are asked when booking.

Health institutions such as the US NIMH note that a medical check-up can help rule out physical causes of what you are feeling; you can bring this up with your doctor.

What if I do not feel comfortable with the professional?

It happens, and it does not mean you did something wrong or that therapy is not for you. Trust in your therapist is an essential part of the process. You can tell them honestly, or simply book with another professional. It is fine to try more than one until you find the right person. If you have been in therapy for a reasonable time and see no progress, it is also worth talking to your therapist about it and considering other options.

Does anything change if it is online or in person?

The content of the session is similar; the logistics change. Online, you need a stable connection, a private place and to join with the access in your confirmation or your account. In person, allow for travel and traffic. If you are unsure which to pick, read online or in-person therapy.

How do I book my first session on ZorroCare?

You can browse the directory of professionals and filter by provider type, treatment area, session format, language and price, or use the guided matcher, a short questionnaire that suggests professionals. When you pick a time slot, it is held for 10 minutes while you complete the booking. Some professionals ask for a deposit, which must be paid within 24 hours or the appointment is cancelled at no cost to you.

ZorroCare is a booking and payment platform; it does not provide clinical care. If you or someone else is in danger, do not wait for an appointment: call 911.
